Liminality: Passages
In anthropology, liminality refers to the “in between” phase between rites of passage, when a person is in neither one phase or another. Taken more metaphorically, these liminal passages are like journeys, physical, emotional and/or spiritual in nature, traveling from one place or phase in life to the next. Forwards, sideways, backwards, or diagonally, up or down, passages involve choices, surprises, and unexpected events, often out of our control.
In this ongoing series, I use angular shapes and lines, along with color and texture, to explore the energy and direction of passages, using the layering capabilities of oil and cold wax to display the nuances of convergence, history, patterns, movement, and tension, along with the happy accidents that are a part of all journeys.
